How did you get started in this field?

I started my career working in boutique PR firms on client accounts in diverse industries like real estate and food service, but I was very interested in climate change and wanted to be working in the climate and energy field exclusively. In an effort to break though during the recession (lots of PR pros were getting laid off and having trouble finding jobs) I paused my career to finish my master’s degree and wrote my thesis about themes in Australian newspaper coverage of climate change. I used that academic experience with my professional background and landed a job as the communications director for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network here in DC. My career has been focused on energy and environment ever since (about eight years now).

What advice would give a woman trying to start her career in renewables?

Know your “why,” and be prepared to speak passionately about it to everyone you meet. Everyone who works in renewables is here for the mission, at least in large part. We deeply care about being part of the solution. When I am hiring people, enthusiasm and commitment to the “why” we do this are the very first qualities I seek.

What is your favorite part of WRISE?

I have spent the last several years focused on solar, so it’s fun meeting women who are working in other technology areas.

If you could give a high five to any person dead or alive who would it be?

Jane Goodall was the first person who popped to mind

In the movie of your life, who would be cast to play the lead (you)?

I have been hearing that I look like Mila Kunis since I was 15, so probably her!
